mhealth, tech, mobile, health

mHealth (mobile health) really solidified itself in 2017 as a titan in the future of healthcare management. As patient populations get more tech savvy, users are turning to their phones for faster, easier and more efficient upkeep. There are thousands of health-related apps that allow you to perform tasks such as counting calories, tracking glucose levels, managing prescription schedules and setting new appointment.

Let’s take a look at just some of the mHealth apps that patients love (and that you should know):

Lose It!

Lose It! is one of the most popular health and fitness apps on the market today. This app does not promote dieting, per se, but allows users to choose their health goals and then recommends daily nutrition and exercise based on that. Users are able to reach their goals by tracking calories consumed and calories burned, giving a more informed look at what regimine is right for them. Lose It! promotes a healthier lifestyle rather than a diet, which makes it more sustainable and more successful. Plus, the app easily integrates with mHealth wearables such as FitBit, Jawbone and Apple watch.

Headspace

Headspace is meditation app that has skyrocketed in popularity over recent years. Created by a former Buddhist monk, the app featured guided meditation, videos, animations and articles to help lead users to a calming and centering moment. Users can take advantage of a 30-day free trial but will then need to sign up for a paid subscription if they wish to continue after that. Headspace is a straightforward app for anyone looking to explore meditation.

Instant Heart Rate

Though many mHealth apps will tell you your heart rate in that moment, think of Instant Heart Rate as your heart rate diary. Users can record their stats throughout the day and tag each one with a descriptor of what they were doing – waking up, relaxing, exercising, etc. There is also a section for additional notes if more in-depth descriptions are wanted. The app also features push notification reminders and a calculated target heart rate.

MyChart

MyChart is an app that works in tandem with the user’s provider to create a more engaging and empowering care experience. This app allows patient to take a more active role in their health management by viewing test results, health records, and prescribed medications. MyChart also lets users schedule appointments, sign up for reminders and pay healthcare bills through the app itself.

Red Cross First Aid

The Red Cross First Aid app is one that should be on every phone. Even if we feel we know what to do in an emergency situation, it’s always best to play it safe. This easy-to-use app provides step-by-step instructions for what to do in a variety of scenarios. Situations that the ap covers include asthma attacks, broken bones and natural disasters. All content is pre-loaded into the app so users never need to worry about whether or not they have service.

Fooducate

Fooducate app is the healthy food companion for every trip to the grocery store. The app allows users to scan or enter foods for on-demand information about the good and bad of each. Fooducate analyzes the ingredient list and nutrition facts of each food to generate information that users may not notice on the labeling: added sugar or sweetener, food coloring, high fructose corn syrup, preservatives, MSG and more. In addition to analyzing the food, the app also offers suggestions of healthier alternatives. Plus, Fooducate allows you to track your food and calorie intake and integrate that information with your mHealth wearable.
